Nawaz tempers ire with wishes

LAHORE: “We pray for the success of Javed Hashmi wherever he goes but he should have better bid a proper adieu to the leadership,” says PML-N President Nawaz Sharif.
Talking to the media after his address to the students of the University of Engineering and Technology in connection with the birth anniversary of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, he said he “spent a very good time with Javed Hashmi” and praised him for “looking after the party well” in his absence.
“Relationship with Mr Hashmi was based on mutual respect and I would pray for his success despite his leaving the party. He must have thought well before deciding to part ways with the PML-N, where he had spent so many years and led struggle for democracy. If he had decided to quit the Nawaz League, he should have properly informed the party leadership and discussed his differences with them,” said Nawaz.
Earlier, addressing the students, he said the PML-N was an ideological party which had always taken a firm stand against the establishment and would not let anyone undermine the sanctity of courts, parliament and the Constitution.
“The economy is in dire straits and the GDP growth rate stands at 2.5 per cent whereas India is growing on a fast track,” he said while urging the government to focus on economic growth and address the problems of the common man. Else it should pack up, he added.
“I will do whatever it takes to create a new Pakistan free from poverty and unemployment,” he said and added: “The PPP government has brought the country to the brink of destruction. Pakistan is a nuclear power due to the services rendered by the PML-N in defence and strategic fields.”
Meanwhile, PML-N spokesman Pervaiz Rashid said Javed Hashmi was a respected party leader. Until recently, he was consulting his party colleagues as to how to beat the Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf (PTI) candidate. “No one knows why he suddenly decided to part ways with the party.”
Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah was candid enough to admit that Mr Hashami had developed differences with the party high command over nomination of the opposition leader. He himself wanted the slot but was denied and this might have prompted the decision, he said.
PML-N parliamentarian Ayaz Amir, while denying rumors that he was also getting ready to follow Javed Hashmi, said a veiled dictatorship did exist in the PML-N which causes problems.
Sheikh Rohail Asghar, an MNA from Lahore, was more respectful when he claimed that the “establishment could have
influenced Javed Hashmi for his decision to leave the PML-N anyway.”
Meanwhile, PML-Q chief Shujaat Husain felicitated Javed Hashmi for joining the PTI. He expressed hope that Mr Hashmi would get a position in the PTI worthy of his stature. He said his family’s good wishes were with him as it had a 40-year long association with him.
